Sindhutai Sapkal , popularly known as the "Mother of Orphans" is an Indian social worker and activist known for her work in raising orphans in India. She received her PhD in Literature in 2016 from the DY Patil Institute of Technology and Research and Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2017.
Sapkal was born on 14 November 1948 in a cattle raising family in Wardha district of Maharashtra. As an unwanted child, she was called as Chindhi (Marathi for "torn piece of cloth"). However, her father wanted to educate Sindhutai so much that was against her mother's wishes.
she got married at the age of twelve, with a man 20 years older than her in her district.
she bore 3 sons till she turn 20.
At the young age of twenty, when nine-months pregnant, Sapkal was beaten and left to die by her husband. She gave birth to a baby girl Mamta in a semi-conscious state in a cow shelter outside their house.
Sindhutai took to begging on the streets and railway platforms to survive. Because she feared being picked up by men at night, she often spent the night at cemeteries. Such was her condition that people called her a ghost since she was seen at night in the cemeteries.[
Later, she has Dedicate her to the orphan For this reason, she is lovingly called 'Mai', meaning 'mother'. She has raised more than 1,050 orphans, she has a large family of 207 son-in-law, thirty-six daughter-in-law and more than a thousand grandchildren.Currently she has opened 5 shelter homes for the orphans where they are being educated as well as provided all the basic amenities of life . She has proved that a mother can be someone who adopts you and takes proper care of you.
At this age, she is happy with her life that she fought well and had served for the society.
She is such an inspirational lady , that no matter how bad the things are going, if you are willing enough, noone can stop you, just be strong and keep going.
