Sunita Choudhary: example of determination and bravery

She was barely 3 years old when she was married off. In their community, child marriages are common; she had been sent to her in-laws after she turned 18. But while growing up, all she cared about was studying.

When she was 5, her village got its first school! she told her father, ‘Mujhe officer banna hai. School bhejo mujhe!’–he gave in. they didn’t have electricity, so she had studied with a lalten lamp.

After school, she juggle her chores & farming. Still, she always came first!

After class 5, she had to walk 6 kms everyday to attend school. Her neighbours used to tease, ‘Itna padhke kya karogi? Sasural hi toh jaana hai.’ But she studied hard, got a distinction & moved to the town for higher studies.

There, she came across an opening for a Police constable. she applied; she was the only girl who passed the written test! When she told her father, he said, ‘Tera officer banne ka sapna poora hona hi chahiye!’

After 9 months of training, she became the first female constable from her village; she was 19. she loved when people saluted her & said, ‘Police sahiba aa rahi hai!’

But a few months later, she started having stomach aches. The doctors said, ‘You have stage 2 ovarian cancer.’ The next 6 months were horrible–she got chemo & lost all of her hair; she only weighed 35 Kgs.

Her father spent 4 lakhs on her treatment–people would ask him, ‘Beti pe paisa kyon kharch kar rahe ho?’; others called her ‘ganji’. So she confined herself to 4 walls.

Even after she resumed work, she wear a cap to cover my head. Around then, she enrolled in music classes & began playing the harmonium–it helped her divert her mind.

Then, when she start living with her husband, she told him that ovarian cancer meant my chances of becoming a mom were less. Still, he said, ‘I want to be with you no matter what.’ He accepted her as she was & that was enough for her.

After, she decided to devote her life to social work. Post duty, she used to teach kids about good & bad touch–they began calling her, ‘Policewali Didi’.

In the last 3 years, she have educated 1000 kids; the police commissioner awarded her for it, she have recorded 25 albums & her hair has grown back! she said that, she often look at her old bald photos–it reminds her of how far she has came & how far she have yet to go as...Policewali Didi!”

she is so brave that she never give up on her life even after facing so many things including negative comments by the society.
